I can't decide who has worse luck; the Buffalo Bills or Illinois Governors over the past 3 decades? I live in Chicago and was forced to witness the Dick Jauron era and recall nothing but bad play calling, losing and that stupid dumbfounded look which notoriously showed up on Dickie J's face when things continually went wrong for his teams.
I witnessed that patented look on Dick's face once gain after his quarterback J.P. Losman was sacked by Abraham Elam & Shaun Ellis picked up the fumble and took it 11 yards into the end zone with less than 2 minutes left to give the Jets the lead 31 to 27 that ultimately led to a much needed Jets victory.
First off, I think Dick was staring at the Jets Cheerleading Squad's Pom Poms, instead of watching the game yesterday because he would have realized that his quarterback couldn't be trusted to hand the ball off; let alone depend on him to make a 5 yard completion to move the chains for a first down.
Living in Chicago, we're used to seeing bad quarterback play, but I can't recall a performance that was more amateur & pathetic as J.P. Losman's was yesterday. Forget the token touchdown that J.P. probably threw with his eyes closed. The back up quarterback's over all stat line was more grim than our nation's recent unemployment rate report. Aside from his only bright spot in the game, J.P. went 24 for 39 with only 149 yards through the air & three interceptions. I promise you, their 3rd string quarterback could have done just as good or better if given the chance.
Forget J.P.'s stats because you can't expect much from a guy that's destined to be nothing more than a clip board quarterback the rest of his career.
I do expect more from an NFL head coach though because he should know the game situation and understand that passing play should have never been called to determine their team's fate. Instead, Dickie J. should have listened to us couch coaches that were screaming at the TV to hand the ball off to a guy (Marshawn Lynch) that is harder to stop than an enraged charging rhino to put their team in a more favorable position to win.
Dick should have asked himself these 3 simple questions before calling that play that ultimately led to their team's collapse.
1) Should I put our team's fate in a quarterback that averaged less than 6 yards per completion up till that point? Answer: No, that was obvious to everyone that was forced to watch the game.
2) Why shouldn't I give the ball to # 23 who gained 121 hard fought yards on 21 carries to wear down the defense and burn more clock? Screw it…let's go as far as getting us a first down even! Answer: Yes, us quarterback coaches would have duct taped the ball to Marshawn's jersey to make sure he got the ball in that situation.
3) Why not punt the ball back to the Jets and Brett Favre who was pretty lousy himself yesterday by going 17 for 30 with a 170 yards and 2 interceptions? It's not like Brett was lighting up our secondary like bombs over Baghdad & is destined to complete his trifecta of interceptions - Right? Answer: No doubt! Favre was terrible yesterday and the Bills defense was solid & could have been leaned on to bring their team a victory.
As you can tell, I absolutely loathe Dick Jauron and am completely dumbfounded that this man continues to be a head coach in the NFL and wonder when the Bill's organization is going to ask themselves two pressing questions?
Why are we trusting this loser to run our team and what do you think Bill Cower's price will be to bring him to Buffalo in 2009 to get us back to the playoffs?
